Rainbow Six: Siege to PS5 and Xbox Series X

Ubisoft reveals Rainbow Six: Siege is heading to next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X and it will have cross-play.

It’s been a busy few days for Rainbow Six: Siege news, as Ubisoft both confirmed the first two operators of Year 5 for the game. However, now Ubisoft has seemingly confirmed Rainbow Six Siege for launch on next-gen consoles when they release to the world later this year. Game director Leroy Athanassoff told WindowsCentral that Rainbow Six Siege will be available for both PS5 & Xbox Series X consoles at launch, or at least that is the current “target.”

Rainbow Six Siege has been one of the most enduring success stories of this generation. And it plans to continue that into the next generation from day one as well. Athanssof confirmed that the game will have a next-gen release, but he couldn’t give an exact date as there’s no final date for either console’s launch. He says, “Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles,” Athanassof stated. “What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.”

The PS5 and Xbox Series X are scheduled to launch in Holiday 2020. So fans can expect Rainbow Six Siege to be playable on these systems around then. And with new changes to its seasonal structure, its team of several hundred employees is committing resources toward the new systems. Ubisoft hopes Rainbow Six Siege leverages that hardware on release day, translating to holiday 2020 availability.

What else can we expect from Rainbow Six Siege?

Ubisoft also says that the release will feature cross-generation multiplayer. Which will connect the PS4 and PS5 and the Xbox One and Xbox Series X communities. It seems the studio wants to take a more proactive approach into the next generation, explains Athanassof. “We don’t want to break our community. So, we want people who buy the new system right away to play it with their friends.” The game director says Ubisoft is working with Sony and Microsoft to allow cross-platform play between PS4 and Xbox One.

However, the decision will come down to the two companies. “This is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony,” Athanassoff said. “We would love to be fully cross-play–have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.”

Will we get crossplay between console and PC then?

Ubisoft has considered the prospect of Rainbow Six Siege cross-play between console and PC. But, due to the obvious advantage PC players will have. “I don’t think there will ever be console cross-play with PC,” says Athanassoff. The only way we could do that kind of stuff is by letting you do that if you want to. By default, you’re always with console. But if you want to match with these players, to have better matchmaking, or whatever. And get your ass kicked by a keyboard and mouse, up to you.”

With 50 million registered accounts, Rainbow Six Siege is still going very strong. It’s been nearly five years after it came out in 2015. Ubisoft has supported the game with new content and updates on a regular basis. Instead of releasing a sequel, Ubisoft plans to support Rainbow Six Siege with the goal of creating 100 more operators over the next decade.

The next Rainbow Six game is Rainbow Six: Quarantine, which is a three-player tactical co-op shooter that’s in development for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. In addition to current-generation consoles. Rainbow Six Siege is now available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
