Blizzard surprise revealed that Overwatch’s Lunar Year of The Rat event kicks off on January 16th.
Overwatch’s annual Lunar New Year event is set to return today in celebration of the Year of the Rat as revealed by a surprise announcement on Twitter. Blizzard Entertainment confirmed the return of the event with a short video on Twitter today. To build some hype for the upcoming event, Blizzard has released a new trailer, with more teasers expected. The video features Hanzo in his Huang Zhong skin, releasing a paper lantern into the air.
Overwatch’s Lunar New Year event returns every January. And is always scheduled as the first event of the year after Winter Wonderland, which only just ended on January 2. It usually features skins and cosmetics for heroes that players can collect and that celebrate Asian culture in many ways. Fans usually have a few days warning before things kick off. However, Blizzard apparently decided to surprise everyone by dropping the news right before it begins. It seems the publisher has lately been keeping recent events under wraps and only announcing them very close to their launch dates.
What came with last year’s seasonal event?
Last year’s event, Year of the Pig, introduced eight new skins, revealing designs like the Lu Bu Reaper skin, the Huang Zhong Hanzo outfit, the Guan Yu Reinhardt costume and the Zhuge Liang Zenyatta unlockable. It also came with a new Capture the Flag map, and a festive version of Lijiang Tower. Capture the Flag will also likely return again as a limited-time arcade mode. “In Capture the Flag, each team attempts to secure the enemy flag and return it to their base, while preventing the opposing team from doing the same,” a message from Blizzard explains. “Determined players can try Competitive Capture the Flag, which includes placement matches, leaderboards, and Competitive Points.”
Overwatch’s Lunar New Year event will be coming with at least two new skins, as confirmed by the game’s official Twitter. Moira and Lucio will be receiving event-themed skins. Moreover, twitter user @OverwatchNaeri posted hi-res photos claiming to show even more Overwatch Lunar New Year 2020 skins for Brigitte, Lucio, Moira, Sombra, Doomfist, Wrecking Ball and Winston.
With Overwatch 2 now in development, this means that resources are being more focused on the upcoming expansion. Which will be featuring a story mode. The good news is that the multiplayer section of Overwatch and its sequel will feature crossplay over various modes. This means gamers will be able to continue enjoying events such as these in the future.
The 2020 Lunar New Year event will begin on January 16 and run through February 5. Gamers can expect the Lunar New Year update to arrive around 7pm, GMT, or 11am PT. That is, if you live in the United States. This will require fans to download and install the latest patch released by Blizzard.
